Southern Districts Dominate List of Lowest Performers in 2025 Exams

The Malawi National Examination Board says all the lowest-performing districts in the just-released 2025 examination results are from the Southern Region, with Neno recording the least percentage of top grades. According to the information released, Neno emerged at the bottom with only 8.68 percent of students achieving grades A and B. It was followed by Chiradzulu with 10.14 percent, Nkhotakota with 11.68 percent, Balaka at 11.98 percent, and Mwanza at 12.75 percent. Other districts in the bottom ten include Machinga (13.00 percent), Phalombe (13.56 percent), Mulanje (13.82 percent), Nsanje (13.90 percent), and Thyolo with 14.11 percent. The figures highlight a worrying regional trend, as no district from the Northern Region appears on the lowest-performing list.

Chakwera Renames Key National Infrastructure After Former Presidents

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has officially renamed key national infrastructure in honour of former Malawian leaders, in recognition of their contributions to the nation. According to a government statement issued from Capital Hill, the renaming exercise has been carried out under the powers vested in the President by section 89(1)(b) of the Constitution and section 5 of the Regional and District Boundaries and Place Names Act (Cap. 18:04). In Blantyre, Chileka International Airport has been renamed Bakili Muluzi Airport, in honour of Malawi’s second Head of State. In Lilongwe, the unnamed portion of the Lilongwe Western Bypass Road stretching from the M12 intersection to the M1 Kamuzu Procession Road intersection near Bunda Turnoff will now be called the Joyce Banda Highway, after the country’s first female president. In a press statement released Wednesday, 13 August, 2025, Dr. Usi said his decision followed deep reflection on recent political developments and was aimed at avoiding a conflict of interest as he seeks the presidency under the Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu (OZAM) party. Empowering Farmers in Chauwa Village

A group of 49 local farmers, comprising 32 women and 18 men, has benefited from a K40 million donation of farm inputs and equipment. The National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) gave this donation to farmers in Chauwa Village, under Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe. The package included a solar-powered water pump, 100 bags of fertilizer, 500 kilograms of maize seeds, and 125 kilograms of beans. According to Humphreys Mdyetseni, NEEF's Chief Executive Officer, the initiative aims to enhance the country's food production capacity and reduce reliance on external sources. Heavy Rains Cause Damage in Mzuzu's Msongwe Area

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past five days has led to a devastating series of house collapses in the Msongwe area of Mzuzu. Nearly 15 houses have been affected, with two incidents involving homes falling on occupants. Fortunately, in both cases, no injuries were reported, despite the alarming nature of the incidents. Innocent Chilunga, a community member from Msongwe ward, confirmed the details, expressing relief that no one was hurt. However, the situation has raised significant concerns for many families residing in similar areas. With the rain showing no signs of abating, residents are fearful that more homes may collapse, putting lives at risk. The community is bracing for potential further damage as the rainfall continues. Eyewitnesses reported that the demonstrations were largely peaceful, but the aftermath has seen a significant impact on the local economy.  Many shop owners, who had opened their businesses as usual in the morning, were forced to close down as the demonstrations intensified. "I've lost a significant amount of business today," said one shop owner, who wished to remain anonymous. "The demonstrations may have been a form of expression, but it's us, the small business owners, who are bearing the brunt of the economic loss." Nkhatabay to host Lake of stars 2025 festival

Nkhotakota District is gearing up to host the Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival for the second time, following its successful debut last year. This year's edition is scheduled to take place at Fish Eagle Bay Lodge from October 17 to 19. After a brief hiatus, the festival returned last year, albeit in October instead of its usual September slot, due to the country's general elections. Sharmila Elias Taijala, director of Dusty Orange Production, the festival's organizers spoke to Daily Times, saying that, "they are committed to delivering a world-class experience that showcases the best of Malawian arts, while celebrating past achievements and nurturing emerging talent.
