Chakwera Renames Key National Infrastructure After Former Presidents

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has officially renamed key national infrastructure in honour of former Malawian leaders, in recognition of their contributions to the nation.

According to a government statement issued from Capital Hill, the renaming exercise has been carried out under the powers vested in the President by section 89(1)(b) of the Constitution and section 5 of the Regional and District Boundaries and Place Names Act (Cap. 18:04).

In Blantyre, Chileka International Airport has been renamed Bakili Muluzi Airport, in honour of Malawi’s second Head of State.

In Lilongwe, the unnamed portion of the Lilongwe Western Bypass Road stretching from the M12 intersection to the M1 Kamuzu Procession Road intersection near Bunda Turnoff will now be called the Joyce Banda Highway, after the country’s first female president.

Additionally, the Area 18 Cloverleaf Interchange has been named the Arthur Peter Mutharika Interchange, commemorating the leadership of Malawi’s fifth president.

The honours take effect from August 9, 2025, and will be formally published in the Government Gazette for legal recognition across all official documents and laws.

This move marks the first time in Malawi’s history that major pieces of national infrastructure have simultaneously been renamed after three former presidents.
