Nkhatabay to host Lake of stars 2025 festival



Nkhotakota District is gearing up to host the Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival for the second time, following its successful debut last year. This year's edition is scheduled to take place at Fish Eagle Bay Lodge from October 17 to 19.

After a brief hiatus, the festival returned last year, albeit in October instead of its usual September slot, due to the country's general elections.

Sharmila Elias Taijala, director of Dusty Orange Production, the festival's organizers spoke to Daily Times, saying that, "they are committed to delivering a world-class experience that showcases the best of Malawian arts, while celebrating past achievements and nurturing emerging talent.

The festival has a rich history, having been founded at Chinthache Inn in Nkhata Bay and later moving to various locations, including Sunbird Livingstonia, Kabumba Hotel in Lilongwe, and Kachete Castle in Nkhata Bay. 

Last year's event featured an impressive lineup, including Amapiano mayor Zere Kingston and South African musician Sho Madjozi.

As the festival celebrates its 20th anniversary, it's expected to make a significant impact on the local community, boosting the hospitality industry, driving development, and promoting cultural exchange.

With its unique blend of music, dance, theater, and visual arts, the Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival is an event not to be missed.

Mzuzu City Paralyzed After Demonstrations: Shop Owners Feel Economic Pinch

Mzuzu, Malawi - A city-wide shutdown was observed in Mzuzu today, 6th May 2025 as shop owners closed their premises in response to demonstrations that took place earlier in the day.  The demonstrations, which drew large crowds, have left the city eerily quiet, with visible economic implications for local business owners. Eyewitnesses reported that the demonstrations were largely peaceful, but the aftermath has seen a significant impact on the local economy.  Many shop owners, who had opened their businesses as usual in the morning, were forced to close down as the demonstrations intensified. "I've lost a significant amount of business today," said one shop owner, who wished to remain anonymous.
