Heavy Rains Cause Damage in Mzuzu's Msongwe Area



Continuous heavy rainfall over the past five days has led to a devastating series of house collapses in the Msongwe area of Mzuzu. Nearly 15 houses have been affected, with two incidents involving homes falling on occupants.

Fortunately, in both cases, no injuries were reported, despite the alarming nature of the incidents. Innocent Chilunga, a community member from Msongwe ward, confirmed the details, expressing relief that no one was hurt.

However, the situation has raised significant concerns for many families residing in similar areas. With the rain showing no signs of abating, residents are fearful that more homes may collapse, putting lives at risk.

The community is bracing for potential further damage as the rainfall continues. Local authorities may need to take preventative measures to ensure resident safety and provide support to those affected by these unfortunate events.

Mzuzu, Malawi - A city-wide shutdown was observed in Mzuzu today, 6th May 2025 as shop owners closed their premises in response to demonstrations that took place earlier in the day.  The demonstrations, which drew large crowds, have left the city eerily quiet, with visible economic implications for local business owners. Eyewitnesses reported that the demonstrations were largely peaceful, but the aftermath has seen a significant impact on the local economy.  Many shop owners, who had opened their businesses as usual in the morning, were forced to close down as the demonstrations intensified.
