Man receives 27 years jail term for rape and robbery

Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Mzuzu has convicted and sentenced Yamikani Esaya Banda to 27 years imprisonment with hard labour for offences of rape and robbery with violence.

According to Sergeant Edson Chipeni Assistant PRO at Mzuzu Police Station, the court through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Billiat Evance heard that on February 19,2026 around 20:00 hours the victim aged 28, and her friend went behind Chakupaleza Filling Station in Mchengautuba, Mzuzu city for driving lessons. While there, they were attacked by the convict and his two friends who are still at large. The victim was raped and robbed Tecno spark 7, Redmi 13c, power bank including cash amounting to k70,000. Total value of items amounting to k2,008, 000( two million and eight thousand kwacha).

The state prosecutor also told the court that the victim launched a complaint at Mzuzu Police Station against unknown criminals and was referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital for medical examination and treatment where the doctor confirmed that she was raped. Investigations were launched which led to the arrest of Banda and was positively identified by the victim. In court, the accused person pleaded not guilty to charges , but the state paraded four witnesses who testified against him and led to his conviction. Banda asked the court for leniency, saying that being in prison might be of bad influence to him.

Chipeni also said that, the state prosecutor argued for stiffer punishment stressing that the convict and his friends were armed and violent and the victim's virginity was broken in the act. When passing the sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Ashford Harawa concurred with the state and sentenced him to 19 years imprisonment with hard labour for rape and 8 years imprisonment with hard labour for robbery. Sentences to run consecutively.

Banda aged 25 hails from Mankhaka Village, Traditional Authority Kawomba in Kasungu District.
