Catholics Begin Lent with Ash Wednesday Observances Marked by Prayer and Repentance

Catholics around the world today marked Ash Wednesday, the solemn day that ushers in the 40-day Lenten season, a period dedicated to prayer, fasting and acts of charity in preparation for Easter.


Across parishes, clergy and the faithful gathered for special liturgies emphasizing humility, repentance and renewal.
Ash Wednesday holds profound spiritual significance within the Catholic Church. It marks the beginning of Lent, a season that invites believers to examine their lives, turn away from sin and renew their commitment to the Gospel through spiritual discipline.


Clergy urged the faithful to live out the core pillars of Lent prayer, fasting and charity not only as religious obligations but as practical expressions of love, mercy and service to others.

The Malawi National Examination Board says all the lowest-performing districts in the just-released 2025 examination results are from the Southern Region, with Neno recording the least percentage of top grades. Mzuzu, Malawi - A city-wide shutdown was observed in Mzuzu today, 6th May 2025 as shop owners closed their premises in response to demonstrations that took place earlier in the day.  The demonstrations, which drew large crowds, have left the city eerily quiet, with visible economic implications for local business owners. Eyewitnesses reported that the demonstrations were largely peaceful, but the aftermath has seen a significant impact on the local economy.  Many shop owners, who had opened their businesses as usual in the morning, were forced to close down as the demonstrations intensified. "I've lost a significant amount of business today," said one shop owner, who wished to remain anonymous. "The demonstrations may have been a form of expression, but it's us, the small business owners, who are bearing the brunt of the economic loss."
